Less salt in the food

The U.S Government has recently passed an act for food establishments and manufacturers to put less salt in their products. It is stated that people who eat foods that are high in sodium intake, tend to suffer from high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. By doing this, they are seeking to encourage Americans in a healthier way of living. When the body has too much salt it is converted to water, thus adding much weight onto an individual. Some manufacturers have already started cutting back on their salt even before the act was passed. Others needed a little more pressure to conform to the new rule.

The thing is, as good as this new change sounds and all, changing the tastes of a mass population as Americans who are used to salty foods high in sodium their whole life, may not be so easy to swallow. Wonder if this will cause people to walk with their salt shakers at their favorite food outlet. Now we know they are definitely going to add salt to what may seem to them as tasteless. The point is, while this is one of the best moves that the U.S Government could make where nations’ health is concerned, the rest is up to the individuals themselves to go easy on the salt shaker.

There are many foods on the market that have way too much salt there by having too much sodium. Too much sodium is also dangerous for your kidneys. While sodium is a nutrient that your body does need, it should mostly come from vegetables. If change is to take place, then it is always best to start with leadership, which is the step the U.S Government has taken. You can only bring the horse to the water, you cannot make it drink. So the next move is for Americans to go easy on their salt intake and try to resist the temptation of adding salt to the products it was decreased from.

In my opinion, if this is to work fully, then the sodium in the table salt or salt shaker should be lessened as well. If not then salt with high sodium content should be banned while only iodized salt be sold. Hopefully this new act would not cause some food items to remain on the shelf collecting dust because no one wants to buy tasteless food. One may also wonder how this is going to affect the food outlets whose customers revel in high sodium fast foods.

Some people disagree with this new act thinking that the American Government is too radical, while some others are ready and willing to comply. The next move is to wait and see how Americans respond to the act. People ought to pay closer attention to their eating habits. It takes a strong mind to bring about such drastic dietary change. It would not be an easy task and I know the American Government is fully aware of this.

What do you think on this?
